Ongoing Courses
Seriously Fun Watercolours
What attracts us to watercolour painting? Is it the magic created when one transparent watercolour is layered over another?
Or perhaps it is the fresh sparkle of a single beautifully laid brushstroke of colour laid on a dappled surface.
Whatever the appeal is for you, it is easy to learn to create pleasing paintings, when you have expert guidance. This course is suited to both novice and experienced artists looking to start or further develop their watercolour skills in a relaxed group. Because class numbers are kept small, each student can be given individual tuition to take them to the next step in their skill development.
Beryl Yeoman is the tutor for this course. She has many years of experience, and her paintings illustrate the very best in watercolour technique
A list of materials required is available at Impressions upon registration.
Term One commences 21 February (9 weeks) $180.00 , Term 2 commences 9 May (10 weeks) $200.00, Term 3 commences 1 August (9 weeks) $180.00 and Term 4 commences 17 October (10 weeks) $200.00.

Artist Inspiration Workshops
IMAGE TRANSFER
This workshop will explore a simple method for transferring images which have been copied or printed into a painting or collage that you are completing.
Acrylic mediums will be used to transfer images onto an artwork surface to become part of the completed image. The special charm of this simple process is the “aged” look achieved.
Sometimes the simple processes yield the best results.
Images can be transferred to: -
- Add a point of interest to a painting or collage;
- Create paintings, craft pieces, greeting cards, invitations etc which incorporate photos and/or printed images with special meaning;
- Give a mellow, aged feel to a piece of artwork or craft project.
This is a workshop to be playful. Whether you consider yourself to be very creative—or just wish you were—this is a workshop which caters for all. When the session is over, you will be able to apply your own style to create interesting pieces.
Please bring 1-2 photocopies or magazine images up to A6 size that you would like to transfer. N.B. If the image has writing incorporated, please have the copy reversed. Photos on photographic paper or printed on an inkjet printer are not suitable.
Protective clothing is recommended.
Fee: $12.00 (Paper, brushes, acrylic mediums and paints will be supplied.)
Tutor: Glenys Della Bosca
Line & Wash with Beryl Yeoman
This technique combines inks with watercolours. It is regarded as one of the most challenging and exciting of all watercolour techniques. This workshop will examine the techniques used, and products available to achieve the best effects. You will see the consequences and effects of using waterproof, and non-waterproof inks. Line & wash is the perfect technique for architectural subjects as well as oriental-style paintings.
Line & wash technique allows you to combine the precise detail of pen and ink work with the fluidity of watercolour washes
Cost: $10.00
Tutor: Beryl Yeoman
Please bring a sketch book, pencil and eraser.
The Rules of Oil Painting
The process of painting with oils need not be complex or difficult to grasp. However, it is essential that when you paint, you understand the nature of the medium you are using so that you can exploit its features and ensure that your painting is archival.
In this workshop you will learn: -
- How oil paint “dries” and how to speed-up “drying” time;
- How mediums should be used to prevent cracking;
- How to thicken the paint for medium-high impasto effects;
- How to achieve a unified finish avoiding a patchy appearance; and
- Some guidelines for varnishing oil paintings.
THIS IS A HANDS-ON WORKSHOP WHICH WILL GIVE YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRY A RANGE OF TRADITIONAL AND MODERN MEDIUMS.
Please note, that in the interests of good health and as many people are sensitive to the aromatics in turpentine (including the workshop leader), only odourless solvents will be used and the studio will be kept well-ventilated throughout the workshop.
Cost: $13.00 includes all materials
Tutor: Glenys Della Bosca
Protective clothing is recommended. Please bring: a small-medium oil painting brush
COMPOSITION
Ever wondered why a painting which has been faithfully rendered is somehow unresolved or leaves you feeling dissatisfied? Chances are, the composition of the piece is flawed.
- This workshop will examine indicators of good composition as well as alerting you to common pitfalls.
- You will be given some guidelines to equip you to plan a work which will engage the viewer.
- When composition is flawed, the artist’s skill in rendering the image may not be appreciated...
The true test of good composition is one that draws the viewer’s eye into the artwork, allowing them to explore the painting, and for the eye to rest naturally on the focal point resulting in a sense of the painting being complete.
Cost: $10.00
Tutor: Glenys Della Bosca
Please bring a sketch book, pencil and eraser.
PAINTING WITH OIL STICKS
Artists paint sticks are real paint in stick form. They are made from highly refined drying oils blended with quality pigments and moulded into sticks.
Painting with Oil Sticks can be a very “freeing” experience. If you want to loosen-up your painting style or simply would like to dabble in another range of paints, join in this workshop to see the potential of these oil paints. Have a go under supervision to see where this medium could take your art.
Tutor: Glenys Della Bosca
Fee: $10.00
All materials will be provided. Protective clothing is advised.
MARKETING FOR ARTISTS
People who we regard as successful artists because they appear to sell their work readily, seldom achieve their success by staying cooped up in their studios painting. If you choose to make your living from your creativity, you must accept that you are operating a small business and like all successful business people, you need a business plan which includes a marketing strategy.
In this one-day workshop, tutor Glenys Della Bosca will take you through the fundamentals of marketing for artists which will include:
- Understanding your product.
- Identifying your target market.
- Determining what is an appropriate marketing budget
- Identifying appropriate marketing tools and resources
- Making the most of free and low-cost options
Operating a business is not easy. Many small businesses do not survive and of these many have failed because of their failure to plan. Just because you have a “free spirit” which you may use to create quality original artwork—that is not enough. You need to channel that energy and creativity into your business practises. Without a clear idea of how to produce a relevant marketing plan and the commitment necessary to implement that plan, you are unlikely to succeed at making a living as an artist. Artistic skills are rarely enough especially in the early stages of an art career.
So if you would like to get your artwork noticed by paying customers and don’t know where to start—this is it! With nearly 30 years practical business experience as well as the knowledge gained working with marketing consultants and professional artists Glenys has plenty of ideas and skills for you to take advantage of.
Fee: $45.00 includes workbook/reference notes
Please bring a pen
